Babysitting for an Ivy League Professor
Nov. 8th, 2023 10:52 pmWhen I walked in, I think the boys were playing legos with their mom. I saw a miniature drum kit behind one of them. The Christmas tree was up. We played a card game. I let them win. After, I gave the youngest his dinner, which was already prepped. I also had to make sure they changed into their jammies, so I did. It seemed odd to me that something so small would be able to put on clothes by themselves. One of them showed me his mom's book-- it had the NYT bestseller sticker on it. There was a box of them in the hallway. I could take one and no one would notice.
We played with some toys, and then we drew. We drew space scenes. I don't remember what we talked about. I think when they were watching a video on the iPad during dinner (was it a cooking show?), I remember one of them making a comment about why Native people were kicked out of the US (there was some relevance to Thanksgiving in the show I think, which is why he asked about it). I'm pretty sure one of them also asked me what my race was.
I enjoyed drawing with the boys. When the parents came back from date night, the dad offered to drive me home, so I accepted (I didn't want to walk for 40 minutes in the dark). I don't remember what we talked about in the ten-minute car ride-- definitely small talk, but I also remember a conversation about something, probably one which he dominated because I could tell he was the type of person who liked to talk. I like to listen, especially when it's entertaining. I wondered if most people knew him as her husband, even though he was a writer too.
This was probably one of my most enjoyable college Friday nights. I never did do it again.
